Features: The development of academic endeavors is like the Yangtze River and Yellow River, with waves following waves, endless and flowing. It is also like the passing of the torch, with each generation building upon the achievements and experiences of the previous one, making the brilliance ever brighter. Later scholars must understand the work already done by their predecessors, inherit their accomplishments and experiences, and continue to advance on this foundation. The Academic Committee of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has gathered dozens of senior experts from dozens of disciplines within our institution. They have decades of research experience in their respective fields and have made significant contributions in their areas of expertise. The published series features representative works selected by each expert from their academic careers, bringing them together for publication. This not only showcases the diligent academic paths they have traveled but also reflects the achievements and developments in various fields of philosophy and social sciences in China over the past few decades, especially since the reform and opening-up. It is a highly meaningful endeavor. The essays included in this collection were published between 1981 and 2003 and are organized by topic. Most of the essays are arranged by the year of publication. For some essays, the arguments have been revised over time, and these revisions have been noted. In this case, the arguments of each essay remain as originally presented, with no changes made.
