Features: The development of academic endeavors is like the vast Yangtze River, with waves following waves, endless and unceasing. It is also like the passing of the torch, with each generation building upon the achievements and experiences of the previous one, making the brilliance ever brighter. Later scholars must understand the work already done by their predecessors, inherit their accomplishments and insights, and continue to advance on this foundation. The Academic Committee of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences brings together dozens of senior experts from dozens of disciplines within our institution, each with decades of research experience in their respective fields and having made significant contributions to their areas of expertise. The published series features representative works selected by each expert from their academic careers, now compiled for the world to see. This not only showcases the diligent academic paths they have traveled but also reflects the partial achievements and developments in various fields of philosophy and social sciences in China over the past few decades, especially since the reform and opening-up. Among the articles included in the collection, the following are believed to more comprehensively reflect the authors' research insights:
1. "Slavery and the State"
2. "Certain Issues in Slavery Societies as Seen in the History of Ancient Greece and Rome"
3. "An Analysis of the Conditions for the Emergence of Athenian Democracy in Antiquity"
4. "On the Historical Status and Structure of the Polis"
5. "A Review of the Views on Monarchy Held by Ancient Greek and Roman Writers (5th Century BC to the 2nd Century AD)"
6. "Weitao's Assumptions and the History of Ancient Greece"
