Features: Chen Qiu, Song Shu, and Chen Furchen were the three enlightenment thinkers of Wenzhou in the late Qing Dynasty, collectively known as the "Three Masters of Dongou." Before the 1990s, due to the lack of collected publications of their works, scholars studying modern Chinese intellectual history could only base their research on Chen Qiu's Teping Tongyi, Song Shu's Liuzhai Beiyi, and Chen Furchen's Jingtu Datongshuo, among others. As a result, the Three Masters of Dongou were not given their rightful place in the history of modern Chinese thought. After the 1990s, my collection Chen Qiu Collection was published as the eighth volume of Wenzhou Cultural and Historical Materials by Zhejiang People's Publishing House. Scholar Wang Ermin of Taiwan, unable to find it elsewhere, finally sought it out through intermediaries. Zhou Wenxuan, an associate professor at Chongqing Communication University and former graduate student of Hebei University, used it to conduct research and published eight papers, including The Evolution of Chen Qiu's Political Thought. After my edited Song Shu Collection was published in two volumes by Zhonghua Book Company, Yang Liyan of Guangxi Normal University and Xu Yuli of Shandong Normal University came to Wenzhou seeking lost works. Scholar Jiang Guanghui dedicated a chapter to Song Shu's thought in his book Stepping Out of Neo-Confucianism: The Internal Logic of Qing Dynasty Thought Development, and numerous papers have been published, such as Zhang Xiqin's A Brief Discussion on Song Shu's Thought. Chen Depu's edited Chen Furchen Collection in two volumes was published by Zhonghua Book Company and held launch events in Hangzhou and Wenzhou. Wu Zhongliang of East China Normal University and Qin Wen of Guizhou Normal University pursued master's degrees on this topic. Dr. Yang Jike of Keio University in Japan had previously traveled to Wenzhou years ago specifically to seek related materials. This encouraging situation has greatly inspired us. To further meet research needs, I have decided to supplement the collection with materials discovered or collected in recent years.
In the Chen Qiu Collection, apart from the manuscripts taken by Mr. Shao Peizi that remain unlocated, two monographs were added this time: Yuan Jing Bao Yao and Jiao Jing Da Wen. However, Yuan Jing Bao Yao was temporarily removed from the print draft to avoid repetition, as it was included as a key work in the Wenzhou Modern Medical Books Collection. The Song Shu Collection has been supplemented with the lengthy essay Zhaiyao of Jia Nan Ji, as well as poems, couplets, and recorded conversations. The appendix has been expanded with eight contemporary critiques of Song Shu, selected eulogies, couplets, and numerous letters from friends and relatives. The Chen Furchen Collection originally contained six articles by others, with numerous errors throughout, which have been promptly corrected. Additionally, multiple important works have been added, including Letter to a Certain Minister, Moral Education, Imperial Examination Essays and Responses, Opening Speech of the Zhejiang Advisory Council, and Revised Draft of the Dazhong Party Manifesto. Given Chen Furchen's roles as supervisor of the Guangdong-Guizhou Vernacular School, president of the Zhejiang Advisory Council, leader of the Dazhong Party, and a renowned professor at Peking University, various eulogies from the Eulogy Record have been selected to help better understand his social contributions.
