What are the manifestations of intellectual disability?

Patient's question:

My child has difficulty speaking clearly and walks late. What are the signs of intellectual disability in children?

Doctor's answer:

Hello! Children with intellectual disabilities often have longer sleep times and are very quiet all day, rarely crying. They take longer to master various movements (such as sitting, standing, walking, and responding) compared to typical children. The crying of children with intellectual disabilities is either sharp or weak, with little variation in tone. When external stimuli cause crying, the time from the start of the stimulus to the resumption of crying is longer. It may take four or more repeated stimuli to elicit crying. They show no interest in toys and will not play with them even if held. They shift from excessive sleep and inactivity in early childhood to constant, purposeless movement in adulthood.
