Author: Zhao Yuanren
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2004-12-01
Features: The Complete Works of Zhao Yuanren aims to comprehensively reflect the academic achievements and humanistic spirit of Professor Zhao Yuanren through all the works collected so far. The complete works are organized into volumes by category, with an expected total of twenty volumes, supplemented by several CDs. The first ten volumes cover all his linguistic works, while the last ten volumes include his musical works, Chinese-English translations, works for Science, autobiography, correspondence, diaries, audiovisual materials, etc. The works in each volume are arranged in the order of their first publication, with unpublished works ordered by completion date, and those of uncertain date placed at the end. The original books or texts are printed in Chinese or English, and are published in the same language when included in the complete works. Some works initially published in Chinese were later rewritten and republished in English; both versions are included in the complete works. A few important works originally published in English are also included, along with their Chinese translations (either translated by the author himself or by others with the author's approval, or some translated drafts without the author's review), to benefit readers. The versions selected for the complete works are considered the most reliable based on research and are either self-edited or approved by the author. The complete works strive to preserve the original form of the works and the author's linguistic style and word usage. Except for obvious printing errors, no changes are made lightly. Traditional characters are generally converted to simplified characters, except for individual works and special cases. Missing characters are supplemented within square brackets [], variant characters are corrected within parentheses (), and doubtful points are marked with [?]. Missing or unclear characters are represented by □. Original titles (personal names, place names, terms) that no longer align with current usage are left unchanged. Some entries in the complete works are accompanied by annotations marked with an asterisk (). General notes are indicated by circled numbers, while "Editor's Notes" or "Translator's Notes" are specially mentioned in the notes. Each volume of the complete works is invited to be reviewed by experts, scholars, and senior editors. During the data collection process, we have received strong support from many individuals and institutions both domestically and internationally, for which we express our sincere gratitude. Director Chen Yuan enthusiastically promoted the publication of the complete works and wrote the preface. Due to illness, he was unable to polish it, and Director Jiang Lansheng completed it in his place to the deficiency, which is hereby stated. Professor Zhao Yuanren's works are extensive, and although the organization efforts have been meticulous, omissions and errors may still be inevitable. We sincerely hope readers will kindly point them out. This volume includes two of Zhao Yuanren's English-language linguistic monographs. A Grammar of Spoken Chinese () is reprinted based on the 1968 edition of the University of California Press. This book was previously translated into Chinese and published in 1979 and 1980 by Lü Shuxiang and Ding Bangxin, respectively. Language and Symbolic Systems () is reprinted based on the 1968 edition of Cambridge University Press. This work has been translated into French (1970), Japanese (1972), and Spanish (1975) at different times. This volume follows the original form, with revisions made only based on the author's own annotations.
