Publishing Date: 2004-07-01
Features: This Selected Works of Ancient Chinese Literature is a teaching material designed to accompany History of Ancient Chinese Literature. The scope of this book ranges from the pre-Qin period to the late Qing Dynasty. For teaching purposes, in addition to ancient works, a small selection of modern works has been included. The book is divided into four volumes in chronological order:
(1) Pre-Qin and Qin-Han,
(2) Wei-Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties,
(3) Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan,
(4) Ming and Qing.
The arrangement of writers follows the chronological order of their eras, while the works are organized first by prose and poetry, followed by fiction and drama. The selection of writers and works draws on the excellent traditions of previous anthologies, with an emphasis on the representativeness of the writers and the characteristic features of the works to align with literary history teaching. The selection of works is designed to be concise and essential, tailored to actual teaching needs. Some lengthy popular works were excluded due to space constraints. The texts are generally based on widely accepted editions, with textual variations resolved by choosing the better version. The annotations are kept brief and clear. During the compilation and annotation process, reference was made to other similar textbooks and anthologies, which provided significant benefits. This book is edited by Guo Yuheng.
The second volume includes two parts: Literature of Wei-Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties and Literature of Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties. The former is written by Xiong Xiangguang and Wan Guangzhi, while the latter is written by Lin Bangjun. It collects works from over 100 writers from the Wei-Jin period to the Five Dynasties, covering genres such as poetry, ci, prose, and fiction.
