Features: The current discussions on the integration of the Yangtze River Delta region are experiencing the second wave of enthusiasm since the 1980s. How to propose development directions based on more than 20 years of development practices in the Yangtze River Delta region, combined with the theory of international metropolitan belts, is a question that needs further exploration. Especially whether it is possible to build the Yangtze River Delta into a metropolitan belt in the world that is not only the largest in scale but also serves as an engine for the global economy—is a topic worthy of further discussion. — Zhu Da Jian (Professor and Doctoral Supervisor, School of Economics and Management, Tongji University)
The Yangtze River Delta economy led by Shanghai is the most developed metropolitan belt in China, and this metropolitan belt has an immeasurable impact on the entire Chinese economy. According to current statistics, the Yangtze River Delta economic circle contributes 28% to China's economy, and its future contribution will be even greater. Currently, the Yangtze River Delta economic zone has developed into the most vibrant economic region in China and has ranked among the world's top six metropolitan clusters.
"Mayor Interviews of the Yangtze River Delta" focuses on a regional theme, inviting more than a dozen mayors from cities in the Yangtze River Delta to engage in face-to-face discussions with the public about regional economic development strategies. To a large extent, this has narrowed the distance between various regions in the Yangtze River Delta. In 2002, the News Comprehensive Channel of Dongfang Radio launched a special program—"Mayor Interviews of the Yangtze River Delta." After the program was broadcast, it received significant attention. Mayors from various cities were invited to Shanghai for interviews. Their clear governance ideas, candid attitudes, and sincere personalities deeply moved the audience. The open-style interviews showcased the personalized charm of the mayors, making each interview lively and unique. At the request of the audience, the program host compiled the "Mayor Interviews of the Yangtze River Delta" into written form and compiled it into a book for readers.
