Her father once served as the president of the Xinhunan News Agency. In 1957, both her parents were labeled as rightists and sent to labor. Can Xu was raised by her grandmother from a young age. This elderly woman was kind-hearted but somewhat neurotic, with some eccentric life habits (such as making up stories, chasing ghosts at night, and using saliva as medicine to treat children's wounds), which greatly influenced the formation of Can Xu's personality. Can Xu was sensitive, frail, and neurotic from a young age, and her short sprint performance and stubbornness were well-known at school. After finishing primary school, she was unable to attend school due to the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution. In 1970, she worked at a neighborhood factory, where she served as a milling worker, assembler, and lathe operator. In 1978, she married a returnee worker from the countryside who had taught himself carpentry. In 1980, Can Xu left the neighborhood factory and opened a tailor shop with her husband. Can Xu has always loved literature and pursued spiritual freedom since childhood. In 1985, she began publishing her works, and to date, she has written over 600,000 words. Her published short stories include "Soap Bubbles on Sewage," "Ame's Sorrow on a Sunny Day," "In the Wilderness," "The Bull," "The Small House on the Mountain," "Things I Experienced in That World," and "Dialogue in Paradise," among others. Her published middle-length novels include "Yellow Clay Street" and "Aging Clouds," and her long-length novels include "Breakout Performance," among others. Many of Can Xu's works have been translated and introduced by overseas literary circles.
