He dropped out of primary school without graduating and worked in rural areas for many years, including a temporary job at a cotton processing plant. In February 1976, he enlisted in the army and held various positions, including soldier, squad leader, instructor, administrative staff, and writer. In 1997, he transferred to newspaper work. He graduated from the Literature Department of the People's Liberation Army Arts Academy and the postgraduate program of Lu Xun College of Beijing Normal University, earning a master's degree in arts.
Mo Yan began writing in 1980. He has published nine full-length novels, including Red Sorghum Clan, The Ballad of Heaven's Garlic, Thirteen Steps, The Republic of Wine, Big Breasts and Wide Hips, Sandalwood Death, and Forty-One Guns. He has also written 24 short novels, such as Transparent Red Carrots, Explosion, Joy, and The Long-distance Run of Thirty Years Ago, as well as over 80 short stories, including The River, White Dog and Swing, and Thumb Shackles. Additionally, he has authored numerous plays and essays.
