Features: This book selects three eulogies. One is for an ancient figure, and the other two are for close friends and relatives. They are all expressions of deep emotions. Especially the eulogies for close friends, "Eulogy for the Twelve Younger Brothers" and "Eulogy for Liu Zihou," are truly tears shed with every word, with blood and tears filling the pages. He vents his accumulated frustrations and sentiments through mourning and remembrance, creating lyrical masterpieces.
This book includes 92 works of Han Yu, comprising 38 poems and 54 essays, covering most of his significant achievements in poetry and prose. However, couplets, fu poems, and historical works like The Annals of Emperor Shunzong are excluded. The poems are based on Qian Zhonglian's Chronological Collection and Annotations of Han Changliu's Poetry, while the essays are based on Ma Qichang's Collected Works of Han Changliu with Annotations. Some revisions made by comparing with other editions are not separately noted.
The works are arranged by theme: poems are divided into three categories—five-character ancient poems, seven-character ancient poems, and regulated quatrains; essays are divided into eight styles—argumentative essays, miscellaneous writings, prefaces to letters, narrative essays, epitaphs, eulogies, inscriptions, and memorial addresses. Each style is ordered chronologically, with brief introductions provided at the beginning. This allows readers to more clearly understand the characteristics and achievements of Han Yu's works in each style.
