Lu Bicheng was born into a scholarly family. Her father, Lu Fengqi, was a jinshi (imperial scholar) during the Guangxu era and served as an associate editor at the National History Archive and a compiler at the Genealogy Office. He was later appointed as the provincial education official in Shanxi and owned a library of thirty thousand volumes. Her mother, Yan Shiyu, was skilled in poetry and prose and had four daughters. The wealthy family and the rich atmosphere of books allowed Bicheng to lead a life of luxury and carefree childhood, reading extensively. At the age of thirteen, her family experienced a major tragedy when her father passed away. Without an heir, all their property was seized by malicious relatives, leaving them with no means to live. Eventually, she had to leave her hometown with her mother and seek refuge with her distant maternal relatives. The tragic experiences of her childhood became an unbearable wound that Lu Bicheng could never fully heal, fueling her deep hatred for feudal autocracy. Later, she embraced advanced Western democratic thought and scientific culture, and her spirit of actively engaging in the world grew stronger. She traveled abroad multiple times, immersing herself in the beautiful natural landscapes and splendid ancient civilizations of Europe and America, and actively participated in international social activities. Throughout her life, Lu Bicheng tirelessly sought knowledge and pursued truth, taking it as her duty to serve and benefit all humanity. Her extraordinary experiences also provided the necessary and sufficient intellectual preparation for her poetic creation.
