One day, The Family was published, and later, under the direction of the acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou, it was transformed into the famous Big Red Lantern. It then competed for the Academy Award, though the outcome was not entirely satisfying. Nevertheless, the Chinese film and literary worlds were significantly "shaken" by it. The Chinese public became acquainted with The Family through Big Red Lantern, and later grew to admire this amiable Su Tong. Su Tong, in turn, embarked on his unique literary path once again, inspired by The Family.
