Wang Ju, born in October 1951 in Changzhou, Jiangsu, graduated from the History Department of Fudan University in Shanghai in 1983, earning a Bachelor's degree in History. That same year, she joined the Institute of Economic Research at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. In 1987, she went abroad to study in France and obtained a Ph.D. in History from the école des Hautes études en Sciences Sociales in 1997. In 1990, she received a Wang An Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Fairbank Center for East Asian Research at Harvard University, spending one year as a postdoctoral researcher and two years as a visiting scholar at Harvard. Currently, she works at the Center for Modern Chinese Studies at the école des Hautes études en Sciences Sociales in France. Her main field of research is the economic history of the Republic of China, with a focus on the study of the Chinese bourgeoisie. Her major academic works include Shanghai's Modern National Cigarette Industry (co-authored), as well as From Cooperation to Confrontation: Shanghai's Textile Industrialists and the Guomindang Government's Economic Policy in the Post-War Period (1945-1949), From Capitalism to Communism: Cadres and Entrepreneurs in Shanghai, 1949-1952 (co-authored), and the paper An Analysis of the Causes of the Development of the National Cigarette Industry During World War II.
