How to safely treat newborn jaundice?

Patient's question:

Born 72 hours, a re-examination showed jaundice again, with an index of 15.6. Hospitalization is recommended. The blood routine test showed low white blood cells and high red blood cells. What does this indicate?

Doctor's answer:

Newborn jaundice reappearing within 72 hours of birth is usually physiological. Neonatal jaundice refers to the phenomenon of yellowing of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclera caused by elevated cholesterol levels in the newborn's serum. The main cause of neonatal jaundice is the continuous increase of bilirubin in the newborn's body, but the liver of the newborn is not yet fully developed, leading to poor decomposition and metabolic capacity, which results in excessively high jaundice. Physiological jaundice does not require treatment. A blood test showing low white blood cell count while other values are high may indicate that the newborn experienced intrauterine aspiration and dehydration during the birth process, leading to changes in blood test results. This condition usually normalizes within a few days.
