Features: From both historical and contemporary perspectives, the Soviet Red Navy and its "natural successor," the Russian Navy, have always been among the world's most powerful navies. Whether it was NATO opponents who once viewed them as "monsters" or former Warsaw Pact allies who relied on them as a "backbone," as well as current Commonwealth of Independent States member states, none could ignore their presence. Perhaps in the past, more attention was focused on their vast nuclear submarine forces, but the Soviet Red Navy and the Russian Navy also possessed an equally significant surface fleet. Among the diverse types of surface warships, large cruisers served as the core and backbone of this surface fleet, as well as the entire navy. As large surface combatants, the Soviet Red Navy and the Russian Navy assigned cruisers the tasks of escorting aircraft carrier strike groups and other fleets, protecting their own or disrupting enemy maritime lines of communication, attacking enemy ships, bases, ports, and shore targets, providing fire support during amphibious operations, and serving as command ships for naval formations.
