Features: Luther Nade was born on June 8, 1879, in North District of North Platte, Iowa, USA. He studied at the Northwest University of Illinois and the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, and obtained bachelor's and master's degrees. From 1906 to 1910, he taught at two universities in the United States. In June 1910, he signed a contract to teach at Sichuan Higher Normal School in the Qing Dynasty. In August of the same year, he arrived in Shanghai via Japan from the United States and then traveled upstream to Chengdu in October, where he taught mathematics, chemistry, geology, and mineralogy at Sichuan Higher Normal School. At the end of 1911, due to the turbulent social situation, he left Sichuan for Shanghai. In September 1912, he returned to Chengdu and continued teaching at Sichuan Higher Normal School. On April 19, 1913, he passed away at a Christian hospital in Chengdu and was buried in the northern suburbs of Chengdu. This book is a collection of letters written by the author during his time in China from 1910 to 1913. It also includes numerous documentary photographs taken by Mr. Luther Nade during his stay in China, which comprehensively record his work, life, and the landscapes of the places he visited. Many of these photographs are important historical materials for studying the economic and cultural development of western China, and they hold great value and are extremely precious.
