Features: The "jinxiang" format originated in the Southern Qi Dynasty and flourished during the Song Dynasty. From the Ming and Qing dynasties onwards, new designs emerged in each generation. The term "jinxiang" refers to small portable boxes used in the past to store items like handkerchiefs and miscellaneous belongings. In ancient times, people studied while walking, sitting, or lying down, reading at any moment. Thus, books were made small in size to fit into these boxes for easy carrying. When traveling, they were convenient to carry, and when resting, they were easy to consult. Leisurely, they could be enjoyed at any moment. Although the jinxiang format is considered the youngest among books, it upholds the principle of "learning and practicing at regular intervals" as advocated by Confucius, and its later achievements were remarkable. Regrettably, in modern times, with the influence of Western culture, bookbinding has shifted to Western styles. While striving for greater elegance, they have become increasingly cumbersome. Carrying them is like a burden for an ox, and reading while lying down is difficult for even a short time. Worse still, some are outwardly luxurious but inwardly hollow, with heavy boxes and light content, misleading readers and distancing them from the true essence of books. The Ancient Society's "Jinxiang" Series was created with purpose, learning from the successes and failures of jinxiang formats throughout history. It aims to return to simplicity and elegance, promoting national culture. The design is small yet complete, the price is affordable yet carefully selected for quality, the selection of titles is appropriate yet emphasizes personality and charm, and the organization is logical yet allows for individual purchases to compile a collection, bringing great satisfaction. Enhanced with fragrant paper, colorful printing, meticulous proofreading, and lively layouts, this series is a testament to the effort and dedication invested in small compilations, making them irresistible upon first sight. Mountains need not be high to be sacred; books need not be expensive to possess charm. Therefore, the series is named "Shuyun Lou," and refined gentlemen will surely appreciate its meaning. This is the preface.
