Sixteenth Century Journey to the Southern Part of China

Author: (English) Boxer, translated by He Gaoji
Publisher:
Publishing Date:
Features: This volume includes three reports by Portuguese and Spanish envoys visiting southern China from 1550 to 1575. The reports and their authors will be discussed in the introduction, while this preface only addresses some issues related to the compilation of this book. The three travel accounts of Europeans in southern China in the 16th century included in this book—Portuguese Biala's China Report, Portuguese Cloriso's China, and Spanish Ratd's Embassy to Fujian and Record of China's Affairs under the Great Ming—have been extensively introduced by the original compiler, Boxer, and need no repetition here. It should be noted that their stay in China was not long, and they did not speak Chinese, so their accounts of China are not all accurate.
