Fertility and Village Culture · Grandson of One Grandfather

Publish Date: 2003-07-01
Features: The two books included in this volume are the author's explorations and insights in the field of family sociology. "Fertility and Village Culture" was written in the early 1990s. Based on data collected from one village in southern China and another in the north, the book compares the significant differences in fertility concepts among people living in different environments and explores the theoretical implications of these differences. "Grandson of a Grandfather" was written based on research materials from a large Beijing family (over 100 members spanning six generations, all descended from the same ancestor). The book describes the interpersonal relationships and patterns of change in this typical Chinese family. Due to the in-depth interview method used in this research, it naturally yielded many interesting stories. The author has always kept in mind the teaching of Fei Xiaotong that sociological research should "produce stories" and considers it both the essence and joy of her research.
