Yan Zhipu (531–c. 590 AD), styled Jie, was originally from Langya Linyi (now Linyi County, Shandong Province). After the Eastern Jin Dynasty, his family resided in Jiankang (now Nanjing, Jiangsu). His father, Xie, once served as a consultant in the Western Mansion of the Prince of Xiangdong in the Liang Dynasty. Yan Zhipu accompanied his father to Jiangling and was known for his talent from a young age.
