Cities (towns) are humanity's great creation, born from human settlement and production development, serving as the main gathering places of social wealth. They vividly reflect the prosperity and development of socio-economy and culture across different eras. In Sichuan, with a history spanning thousands of years, there are numerous cities and towns with diverse characteristics. The province boasts 53 national and provincial historical and cultural cities (towns). These cities (towns) are rich in historical heritage and profound cultural connotations, typifying the development trajectory and traditional landscapes of Sichuan's urban areas. They hold great value for urban scientific research and architectural art, representing a precious cultural heritage for our province and an important part of China's historical and cultural legacy. Historical and cultural cities (towns) are cultural, tourism, and economic resources of special value. Preserving, continuing, and promoting their historical and cultural heritage undoubtedly plays a long-term and immeasurable role in enhancing urban recognition and the socio-economic development of these cities (towns). In recent years, the urban landscape of our province has undergone remarkable changes, yet the protection of historical and cultural cities (towns) at all levels faces significant challenges. In urban planning and construction, it is essential to balance the relationship between preservation, inheritance, and development. "The future is shaped by the present, and the present draws from the past." To ensure urban sustainable development and maximize the benefits of historical cities, we must undertake this monumental task that benefits the present generation and contributes to future generations. The book "Historical and Cultural Cities of Sichuan," jointly edited by the Sichuan Provincial Construction Committee, the Sichuan Mayors' Association, the Sichuan Urban Science Research Association, and the Sichuan Urban and Rural Planning and Design Research Institute, has done a great thing for the people of Sichuan. The book is richly illustrated, covering the administrative evolution and morphological changes of the cities, traditional layouts, historical blocks, famous scenic spots, cultural customs, and historical urban planning. It is highly distinctive. On the occasion of the publication of "Historical and Cultural Cities of Sichuan," I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the comrades who have contributed to the protection and development of our province's historical and cultural cities (towns), as well as to the experts and scholars who have devoted labor to writing and editing this book.
