Features: Niels Bohr's life spanned an era of revolutionary changes in science itself and an era of significant impact of science on society. At the beginning, the reality of the atom was still debated, the structure of the atom remained a matter of speculation, the nucleus had not yet been discovered, and the practical application of atomic energy, whether for good or evil, had not even appeared on the distant horizon. A wide range of readers, especially young readers, enjoy reading biographies, eager to draw nourishment, inspiration, and motivation from them. Biographies of world-renowned figures are particularly beloved by young people. These figures are among the most influential in history. Most of them have stood at the forefront of their time and fought hard, or with their profound wisdom, advanced world civilization, or with their powerful political careers, profoundly influenced the course of history, or with their great achievements in the field of natural sciences, benefited humanity. However, like ordinary people, any famous person or great figure is limited by history and has various shortcomings. The Commercial Press has always attached great importance to the translation and publication of biographies. Since the 1980s, this translation work has been carried out more systematically, with the support and assistance of the translation community and the reading public, over a hundred have been published in the form of monographs or popular reading materials. However, due to the past publication of such biographies as individual volumes, they were not easily accessible for systematic study and reference. Therefore, we have decided to select biographies of representative figures from different eras, countries, and ethnic groups from the previously published works and compile them into this series of "Biographies of World-Famous Figures." This year, the first batch of the series will be published, consisting of 20 volumes, and it will be supplemented annually in the future, with the aim of forming a magnificent and complete series after several years. Since the present series is printed using the original typesetting, the translations have not been re-proofread, and the formatting is not entirely uniform. The original prefaces and postfaces that could be used have been retained, with minor revisions to some of them. For the new translations to be added in the future, we will strive to make them richer in scientific and knowledge-based content while maintaining the detailed and vivid characteristics of the existing selections, thereby better meeting the needs of readers.
