Features: Thompson (1869-1942) was one of the most renowned American modern bourgeois medieval historians. He was born in Iowa, a central state in the United States, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1892. After completing his studies at the University of Chicago in 1895, he taught medieval history at the same university until 1932. In his later years, he also taught at the University of California. He passed away in 1942. His major works include The Religious Wars of France (1909), The Feudal System of Germany (1928), Economic and Social History of the Middle Ages (1929), Economic and Social History of the Later Middle Ages (1931), The Medieval History of the West (1933), Medieval History (two volumes, 1932), An Introduction to the History of Europe in the Middle Ages (1937), and The History of Historiography (two volumes, 1942), among others.
