The Annals of Yue, also known as Record of Yue, is an important classic documenting the early history and geography of Wu and Yue in China. It is also referred to as Yue Jue, Yue Lu, Yue Ji, and so on. The term "Jue" in the title was traditionally interpreted as "extinction," but modern research suggests it is a phonetic translation of an ancient Yue language word for "record," making it a specific term for the historical records of the Yue state.
The content of The Annals of Yue primarily revolves around the historical events of the rivalry between Wu and Yue during the late Spring and Autumn period and the early Warring States period, tracing back to the legendary Xia Yu and extending to the Han Dynasty. It also touches upon the politics, economy, military affairs, astronomy, geography, calendar, and language of various feudal states. Some of its records are unique to this text and cannot be found in other extant classics, while others complement and verify information found in other sources, making it highly valued by scholars.
In the process of modern social science research, many scholars have utilized The Annals of Yue from different perspectives and to varying degrees to examine specific issues in Chinese history, Chinese literary history, Chinese ethnic history, the history of Chinese linguistics, and Chinese historical geography, achieving significant results. This demonstrates the reference value of this book for research in the aforementioned disciplines.
