Embroidery patchwork is an ancient handicraft that originated from folk embroidery and patchwork techniques. Its characteristics include: bright colors, beautiful composition; prominent imagery, diverse themes, strong expressiveness; easily obtainable materials, and convenient production. Therefore, it is loved by a wide audience, especially women. The authors of this book are retired cadres who have always been fond of arts and crafts. They often make handicrafts to beautify their homes and enrich their lives. After retirement, with ample time, they devoted their main efforts to the study and creation of embroidery patchwork. Based on their decade-long experience in making embroidery, their art can be categorized into types such as: imitative traditional Chinese painting patchwork, decorative painting patchwork, collage patchwork, and mosaic patchwork.
Imitative Traditional Chinese Painting Patchwork: As the name suggests, this type of patchwork is based on traditional Chinese painting (especially meticulous brushwork painting), using appropriate fabrics to cut and paste. This style of patchwork combines the artistic charm of meticulous brushwork painting with strong texture. Especially when the works are inspired by the creations of master artists, they achieve a high artistic level. In this book, the authors introduce their own works that imitate the styles of master painters like Fu Feiyan and Yu Zhizhen, achieving both resemblance in form and essence. On the foundation of imitating others' works, one can also design their own drafts for creative expression.
Decorative Painting Patchwork: This type of patchwork emphasizes the presentation of aesthetic beauty, focusing on the exaggeration and distortion of color and form. Decorative patchwork covers a wide range of themes, such as flowers, animals, figures, and landscapes. To create a decorative painting, one must first unleash imagination to compose and shape, then select suitable designs, and finally choose colorful fabrics that complement the artwork. The key lies in harmonizing elements like form, composition, material selection, and color coordination to achieve perfection.
Collage Patchwork: This involves cutting out individual patterns from colorful fabrics and then skillfully arranging and combining them according to one's own ideas to create a work. Beginners can start with collage, progressing from small to large and freely combining elements. Often, this process results in exquisite artworks, offering great artistic enjoyment.
Mosaic Patchwork: This technique uses foam boards to carve out lines according to selected designs, then colorful velvet fabrics onto the surface to create a unique visual effect.
There are many methods and types of embroidery patchwork, and the above only covers a part of the authors' recent activities in this art. We introduce it to you in the hope of exchanging ideas with fellow enthusiasts and improving together. Let us use our hands to seek beauty, discover beauty, and create beauty, beautifying our lives and celebrating the great era.
