Uwe Wessel was born in Dresden, Germany in 1943 and is currently a professor at the University of Wuppertal, Germany. On the German communication design stage, he holds a solitary yet prominent position, with his direct and concise style being highly notable. However, he does not wish for his students to be influenced by him but instead consistently advocates for the importance of personal inner creativity. Among the countless awards Uwe Wessel has received include: twice winning the Grand Prize at the Lahti International Poster Triennial in Finland in 1983 and 2001, the Silver Award at the International Poster Invitational in Colorado, USA in 1987, awards at the Munich International Poster Column Triennial in 1989 and 1992, the Grand Prize at the German Visual Design Award International Competition in Essen, Germany in 1995, the Gold Award at the Biennial International Design in Brno, Czech Republic in 1996, the Silver Award at the Chaux-de-Fonds International Poster Festival in France, two Bronze Awards at the Toyama International Poster Triennial in Japan, and the Gold Award at the European ADC Annual Exhibition in 1996. He also won the Silver Award at the ADC in New York twice in 1998 and 2002.
Yoko Ishikawa defines design as: 1. Eternity; 2. Revolution; 3. Originality. I would like to recommend her design philosophy to Chinese design classrooms. This triangular concept encompasses interpretations of technology, courage, creativity, and cultural heritage in design academia. You may not agree with my statement of elevating design to an academic realm, but the existence of design education itself is an acknowledgment of design academia. Design is a systematic discipline with teachable and learnable history and theory, and it continues to evolve in countless directions. The pillar of academic research is the scientific spirit. Understanding this spirit is akin to a designer recognizing that every design is first a job. So when you see a three-month graphic design crash course advertised in the newspaper again, you might smile wryly. Hegemann, Yerding, Los, Zosler, Matis, and Professor Vasiliev—undoubtedly, they are outstanding graphic designers of this era. This series of books introduces their understanding of design and their methods of design education, and importantly, it also features the creations of young designers influenced by them. I once again thank them for their assistance! I also thank the China Youth Publishing House for their assistance!
Postscript: Three people walk together, and there will always be a teacher among them!
