Features: This book is based on the teaching plan and syllabus formulated by the former State Machinery Commission's "Industrial Automation Instruments" Professional Teaching Guidance Committee in the September 1987 Beidaihe Conference. It serves as a required textbook for students majoring in industrial automation instruments and related fields in higher engineering colleges, covering the fundamental content of modern control theory—the state-space method. The state-space method is not only the foundation of control theory but also the foundation of modern network analysis and linear system theory. Automation students should be familiar with this basic method. The mathematical foundation of state-space analysis is linear algebra and matrix theory, which have already been taught in the Engineering Mathematics course. For review purposes, some sections are briefly repeated in this book. Controllability and observability are fundamental issues in state analysis, and they are appropriately explained in this book. Lyapunov stability theory is useful for the analysis and synthesis of both linear and nonlinear systems. It is one of the recurring classic theories in control theory, and this book provides a basic clarification of it. Deterministic optimal control theory involves functional concepts. Considering that some students may lack knowledge in this area, the book provides a popular explanation of the basic concepts and principles of functional analysis. The book introduces three fundamental methods of optimal control: the variational method, maximum principle, and dynamic programming. It specifically discusses state feedback and output feedback control problems. The observer problem is also briefly outlined. Of course, due to time constraints, model simplification and minimal realization issues are either not mentioned or only generally introduced. Interested readers can refer to relevant literature. The text is clearly written, concise, and comprehensive, with accurate and easy-to-understand descriptions of basic concepts, theorems, definitions, and the like. This book is suitable for use by teachers and students in industrial automation instruments, industrial electrical automation, and other related fields.
