Features: The Comprehensive Course 1 to 4 are English foundation textbooks written for first and second-year English majors in higher education institutions. They were collaboratively developed by four universities: Shanghai International Studies University, Fudan University, East China Normal University, and Shanghai Normal University. Most of the texts in Comprehensive Course 1 to 4 are original works by British and American authors, with the exception of a few classic articles. The majority of the texts are selected from foreign original textbooks, newspapers, magazines, and other publications since the 1970s. The types of texts include narrative, expository, argumentative, and descriptive essays; the themes cover society, culture, politics, ecology, technology, as well as humanistic cultivation, interpersonal relationships, ethics, character development, and more. The texts in this volume cover a wide range of topics, including culture and education, politics and economy, war and peace, morality and ethics, marriage and family, love and kinship, technology and life, knowledge and wisdom, etc. This enables students to broaden their perspectives and enhance their humanistic literacy while learning English.
