After 2000, Chinese students had more options. With China's development, some families became wealthier and could afford to study abroad. While the U.S. stubbornly believed that Chinese students were too poor to pay tuition, their neighboring countries like the UK, Australia, and others, like hunting dogs, keenly sniffed out the passion of Chinese students for studying abroad and the business opportunities within it, beginning to admit large numbers of Chinese students to study in their countries. Faced with the sudden emergence of numerous choices, Chinese students were overwhelmed and flocked to study abroad. The IELTS, the language proficiency test for Commonwealth countries corresponding to TOEFL, became another important exam that Chinese students had to take for studying abroad. When Americans were satisfied with their own established standards and insisted that TOEFL was the best language testing system in the world, IELTS took a more practical direction, emphasizing the importance of students' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in language testing. When Americans realized their mistakes and began to reform the TOEFL exam, tens of thousands of Chinese students had already gone to study in Commonwealth countries. We hope that Chinese students do not lose themselves in their choices and do not choose for the sake of choosing. New Oriental is also working hard for the ideal that remains unshakable in our hearts—that is, to help Chinese students on their path forward, becoming stepping stones or accelerators to help them overcome life's obstacles. The publication of this IELTS book is a small testament to our efforts. Perhaps it may not be the best IELTS book, but it has been poured into by the entire heart of New Oriental IELTS teachers and incorporates nearly a decade of teaching experience from the teachers. These efforts and experiences can be read between the lines of the entire book.
