The College English series textbooks, since their introduction in 1986, have been revised several times to adapt to changes in teaching trends. The official version was published in 1992, and it underwent further revisions in 1998. This series has been in use for 20 years and has been widely welcomed by institutions. It has received national awards and remains vibrant through continuous updates and improvements. This book is the Reading Coursebook for the College English series (3rd Edition). The revision was carried out in accordance with the Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial) issued by the Ministry of Education in 2004, combined with the current situation of college English teaching in China. Therefore, the direction of our revision is to enhance students' reading skills while also focusing on cultivating their comprehensive English application abilities.
This revision does not alter the original format of the book, which consists of ten units per volume, with three texts per unit. Due to varying course arrangements across institutions and differences in students' reading abilities, schools may selectively use this textbook based on their specific circumstances. In the arrangement, each unit’s content is designed to be more engaging, and it is recommended to focus on these sections when using the book.
After each text, there are two types of exercises: reading exercises and vocabulary application exercises. The vocabulary application exercises are designed to be diverse and innovative, such as summaries of the usage of polysemous words, the flexible use and collocations of small words, distinctions between homonymous words, and word derivation. These exercises not only help students summarize what they have learned but also enhance their adaptability and responsiveness. Reading exercises are mandatory, while vocabulary exercises can be completed entirely or selectively based on individual needs and abilities.
To boost learning interest, a self-assessment exercise is added after every fifteen lessons, along with supplementary reading passages for leisure. Students can use these to assess their improvement in reading skills. (Answers to English-Chinese translation and vocabulary exercises are provided in the Teacher’s Book.)
