Features: College English is a series of textbooks developed in accordance with the Teaching Syllabus for College English (Undergraduate Programs for Liberal Arts and Science), which was approved by the State Education Commission in 1986. The series consists of five textbooks: intensive reading, extensive reading, listening and speaking, fast reading, and grammar and exercises. It was co-authored by six key universities across the country. The textbooks were first published as trial editions in 1986, followed by the official publication in 1992. In the same year, they were awarded the First Prize of the National Higher Education Second Outstanding Textbook Award and the First Prize of the State Education Commission's Second Outstanding Textbook Award for Higher Education. In 1998, based on extensive feedback, the College English series was revised according to the Teaching Syllabus for College English (Undergraduate Programs for Higher Education). The revised edition placed greater emphasis on the versatility of the textbooks across disciplines such as liberal arts, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine, aiming to provide students with a broad, solid, and firm foundation in language. To promote the reform of college English teaching and meet the demands of society for students' English proficiency, the Ministry of Education issued the Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial Version) (hereinafter referred to as the Teaching Requirements) in 2004. In line with the teaching objectives for college English outlined in the Teaching Requirements, which is to "cultivate students' comprehensive English application skills," the authors decided to revise the textbooks again in 2004 to meet the needs of talent cultivation in the new era.
