Features: College English is a series of textbooks developed in accordance with the College English Teaching Syllabus (for Liberal Arts and Science Undergraduates) approved by the State Education Commission in 1986. The series consists of five types of textbooks: intensive reading, extensive reading, listening and speaking, rapid reading, and grammar and exercises. It was co-authored by six key universities across the country. The textbooks were first published as trial editions in 1986 and as official editions in 1992. In the same year, they were awarded the First Prize of the Second National Excellent Textbooks for Higher Education and the First Prize of the Second National Excellent Textbooks for Higher Education by the State Education Commission. In 1998, based on extensive feedback, the College English series textbooks were revised according to the College English Teaching Syllabus (for Undergraduate Colleges and Universities). The revised edition placed greater emphasis on the general applicability across disciplines such as liberal arts, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine, aiming to provide students with a solid and broad language foundation. To promote the reform of college English teaching and meet the demands of society for students' English proficiency, the Ministry of Education issued the Teaching Requirements for College English Courses (Trial Version) (hereinafter referred to as the Teaching Requirements) in 2004. In line with the teaching objectives for college English proposed in the Teaching Requirements, which are to "cultivate students' comprehensive English application skills," the authors decided to revise the textbooks again in 2004 to meet the needs of talent cultivation in the new era. The principles of this revision are as follows:
1. The positioning of the textbooks remains unchanged. College English is a comprehensive educational textbook (English for integrative purposes) rather than a specialized textbook (English for specific purposes), designed to help students from various undergraduate majors further build a solid language foundation.
2. The principle of material selection remains unchanged. Since College English is a comprehensive educational textbook, the selection of materials must be diverse in themes, genres, and language, all of which contribute to building a strong language foundation. The materials follow the three principles of being interesting, informative, and thought-provoking to stimulate students' interest in learning English.
3. When updating the texts, attention is paid to the integration of classic and contemporary elements, as well as the fusion of scientific and literary styles, ensuring that the selected texts withstand the test of time and are rich enough to be savored repeatedly. These two fusions guarantee the teachability and learnability of the textbooks and are the source of their vitality.
4. In this revision, following the objective of the Teaching Requirements to cultivate "comprehensive English application skills," special consideration is given to enhancing listening and speaking training, particularly raising the requirements for speaking skills.
