Features: Before practicing calligraphy, one must first understand how to hold the brush and how to move it. Once the correct methods of holding and moving the brush are mastered, progress in copying will be easier; otherwise, it will be in vain. If the brush is held correctly but the movement method is wrong, or if the movement method is correct but the holding method is wrong, it will also be in vain. Only when the methods of holding and moving the brush are practiced sufficiently can one begin to copy. Copying calligraphy involves two processes: "mochi" (tracing) and "lin" (writing). "Lin" is further divided into three steps: "ge lin" (copying within a grid), "dui lin" (copying alongside a model), and "bei lin" (copying from memory). These steps must be followed in order and cannot be mixed up. During "mochi" and "lin," one must always pay attention to capturing the characteristics of the model. If the characteristics are not grasped, the brushwork will lack direction. Moreover, whether in "mochi" or "lin," one will not always progress smoothly and will inevitably encounter obstacles and setbacks multiple times. How to overcome these obstacles and navigate these difficulties should also be prepared for in advance.
