The first generation was born between the late Qing Dynasty and the Xinhai Revolution (1911). All of this generation's architects studied architecture abroad. The second generation was born in the 1910s and graduated from university before the liberation, with a minority going abroad for study. The third generation was born between the 1930s and 1940s and graduated from university after the liberation. Their formative years coincided with the War of Resistance Against Japan, the War of Liberation, and the 1950s and 1960s after the liberation. The fourth generation was born after the liberation and grew up during the Cultural Revolution. They attended university during the era of reform and opening up. Architects in their thirties are also temporarily included in the fourth generation.
