Features: The 7th "Huanai Huai" China Interior Design Competition, organized by the Interior Design Branch of the China Institute of Architectural Design, was held in 2003. Looking back at the (submitted works) from the past seven years, we can see the trajectory of China's interior design development. Through years of design practice and theoretical discussions by a wide range of designers, we have gradually moved away from a design model that only focused on form, shifting more attention to the (substance) of design. We now prioritize functional requirements, crowd flow organization, and the broader consideration of the indoor physical environment and cultural taste. Years of relentless effort have led to continuous improvement in our design (level), with works gradually becoming more mature. The competition reflects these changes in the design field in a timely manner. Through post-competition national exhibitions of (submitted works), selected collections, and CD releases, the results are presented to more designers and the public for observation and (exchange). New design concepts are rapidly being accepted, contributing to the year-on-year improvement of China's interior design level. These new works, in turn, influence other designers. The competition has become a powerful driving force in advancing China's interior design development. However, many issues still remain before us, such as humanized design, green design, and sustainability. The application of new technologies, the full utilization of natural energy, and the selection of environmentally friendly decorative materials all require designers to think, research, and explore further. Future competitions will also reflect these challenges.
The scale of the 2003 competition was 1.5 times that of 2002, with over 1,000 participating projects, 1,585 display boards, and a total of 2,457 participants, surpassing any previous edition. The most notable feature of this year's (submitted works) was the narrowing of gaps in design (level) and the gradual fading of regional differences. At the same time, the emergence of new talents also became a highlight of the competition. Among the winning designers, many new faces of middle-aged and young designers appeared, indicating the growing strength of the interior design team. Now is an era of rising new talents, with a large number of outstanding middle-aged and young designers becoming the backbone of China's interior design. Huanai Group not only sponsored this competition but also, together with the institute, organized designer salons in ten major cities before the event to promote and mobilize participation, playing a significant role in advancing the competition's development. We extend our gratitude to them for their contributions.
We look forward to the support and participation of all interior designers and believe that future interior design competitions will be even better.
