Publish Date: 2004-02-01
Features: This book is a compilation by planner Nagasawa and designer Nakamura, who each stand on their respective perspectives, selecting school buildings constructed in the recent decade that have expanded new possibilities and provided topics for spatial creation. Based on their on-site visits, they have compiled this book. The design examples in the book are written based on the following viewpoints:
(1) What problems existed in the initial planning stages and how were they resolved? To clearly describe the entire process, the book includes early sketches and drafts.
(2) Upholding the idea that classrooms are the fundamental spaces for education, the book introduces furniture arrangements and detailed drawings closely tied to teaching activities for classrooms and open spaces.
(3) Recognizing that the composition of a building is one of the key factors in determining the atmosphere of a school, the book consistently collects and compiles all components of school buildings, including those made of wood.
(4) For each project, the planner and designer comment separately from their own perspectives in the form of a dialogue. This not only critiques key points in school design but also discusses new perspectives that could contribute to future development.
(5) The strengths of each project are highlighted, and keywords for both planning and design are selected. These are organized and presented in a comparative table to make the key considerations in planning and design clear.
Additionally, the book not only elaborates on the construction of school buildings, planning challenges, and explorations in spatial composition but also includes short essays on current topics such as global ecological environments, the IT revolution, school restrooms, and the renovation of existing facilities, discussing the status of school buildings abroad. These essays are interspersed throughout the book.
The construction methods introduced in the book, as well as the educational spaces created by the individual talents of planners and designers, are highly beneficial for further understanding school architecture. If this book can serve as a reference for the construction of new types of school buildings in the future, we would be honored.
