What should I do if the baby doesn't drink water?

Patient's question:

My baby is three months old and is breastfed. However, he doesn't drink any water at all. Whether I put sugar in the water or not, he won't drink it. Even when I put it in a bottle, he won't eat it. I don't know what to do.

Doctor's answer:

If the child is breastfed, they do not need to supplement with plain water even in hot summer; secondly, the child's taste buds are fully developed after birth, and many children are unwilling to drink water. If the child is formula-fed, plain water can be added once between two formula feedings. If the child is unwilling to drink water, diluted formula can be given once after two normal-concentration formula feedings. If the baby has already started on solid foods, rice porridge, rice soup, fruit puree, or fruit juice can be used as alternatives to plain water.
