Up to the modern era, according to the incomplete statistics in Chronology of the Analects by the Japanese scholar Hayashi Taisuke, there are as many as three thousand related documents, among which the most renowned and still accessible today include: Zheng Xuan's Commentary on the Analects (Eastern Han Dynasty); He Yan's Collected Explanations of the Analects (Cao Wei, Three Kingdoms period); Lu Deming's Phonetic and Semantic Explanations of the Analects (early Tang Dynasty); Zhu Xi's Collected Explanations of the Analects (Song Dynasty); and Liu Bao'an's Corrective Explanations of the Analects (Qing Dynasty). This book is an accessible reader compiled for readers with intermediate proficiency, with explanations of the canonical text largely referencing the annotations of He Yan, Zhu Xi, and Liu Bao'an while incorporating the author's own interpretations. The book was previously listed as part of Shanghai's "Series of Translated and Annotated Chinese Classics." For this reissue, in addition to removing the passages following each chapter, all translations and annotations have been revised.
