What is a thyroid hemangioma

Patient's question:

I've been feeling unwell lately, and my neck is also very uncomfortable. I thought it was because I overexerted myself while working. I went to the hospital for a check-up, and they said I have a thyroid hemangioma. What is a thyroid hemangioma?

Doctor's answer:

Thyroid hemangioma refers to the enlargement of one side of the thyroid gland, sometimes accompanied by neck swelling and pain, which becomes more pronounced during exercise. In a few patients, difficulty speaking or hoarseness may occur during exercise, but speech returns to normal after rest. It may be caused by the enlargement of the hemangioma during exercise and compression of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, and can occur at any age. However, symptoms typically appear after middle age. It is more common in females than males, with tumor diameters usually less than 5 centimeters. Surgical treatment is not required. Regular follow-up and monitoring are necessary.
