Features: The manuscript of the cable-supported bridge version was written between 1980 and 1982. At that time, the author participated as a consultant in the technical committee of the Statsbroen Storebaelt bridge, organized by the owner of the design and construction of the Great Belt Bridge. During the design period from 1976 to 1978, comprehensive research was conducted on a large number of different designs for cable-stayed bridges (span exceeding 850m) and suspension bridges (span exceeding 1800m). During that period, the idea of writing a monograph covering both cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges had matured. In 1979, the Danish government decided to postpone the construction of the Great Belt Bridge and pause the design work for 5 years. The time to write the manuscript finally arrived, giving me ample time to engage in writing work. The second phase of the construction of the Great Belt Bridge took place in 1987, when the Danish government approved the establishment of a new corporate organization. The author was appointed as a technical consultant and was able to participate again in the design work of ultra-large and ultra-span cable-supported bridges, in the form of cable-stayed bridges with spans of 900–1200m and suspension bridges with spans of 1000–1800m.
