Features: This textbook can be used as teaching material for traffic civil engineering majors such as Road and Bridge Engineering Technology and High-Grade Highway Maintenance and Management in vocational and technical colleges. It is also suitable for technical personnel engaged in highway and bridge design, construction, and maintenance. The book consists of five chapters. Chapter 1 is an introduction, providing an overview of the distribution of special regions, climatic and hydrological conditions, geological and topographical features, as well as an introduction to the general situation, development trends, and learning methods of highways in special regions. Chapter 2 covers highways in permafrost regions, introducing the definition of permafrost, frost heave mechanisms, physical and mechanical properties, and regional characteristics. It also discusses the basic knowledge of highway design, construction, and maintenance in permafrost regions, as well as the problems and prevention measures for subgrade diseases in snow-prone areas and brine flow ice areas, and the selection of foundation depth for small bridges and culverts. Chapter 3 focuses on highways in collapsible loess regions, introducing the engineering and hydrological properties of loess and their impact on engineering. It covers foundation treatment in collapsible loess regions and maintenance methods for highway subgrades, as well as key points and methods for the design and construction of highway subgrades in these regions. Chapter 4 discusses highways in saline-alkali soil regions, covering route selection principles and surveying key points, subgrade design principles, and the treatment of subgrade slopes and shoulders. It also includes construction methods and key points for subgrade construction, as well as the characteristics, design, and construction of subgrades in salt lakes, common subgrade diseases and prevention measures, and daily maintenance of highways in saline-alkali soil regions. Chapter 5 introduces highways in desert regions, covering desert topography and wind-sand movement patterns, the harm caused by wind and sand to highways, surveying and design of highways in desert regions, construction of highways in desert regions, and maintenance of highways in desert regions.
