What should I do if my child always cries and screams?

Patient's question:

My 3-year-old child always cries and fusses, even at night. I want to know what the reason is and what I should do.

Doctor's answer:

Crying is a form of emotional communication and a way to express oneself. When a baby is born into the world, the first thing they learn is to cry. A child's crying, physiologically, represents hunger, unmet needs, illness, discomfort, etc.; psychologically, it represents grievances, frustrations, fear, sadness, dissatisfaction, repentance, venting, demands, and the need for care and attention. If a child cries because their desires are not met, parents should consider whether their desires and requests are reasonable. If they are unreasonable, even if they can be fulfilled, they should not be indulged; if they are reasonable, they should be met. If they cannot be met immediately, parents should patiently explain to the child. But they must tell the child: crying won't get what they want; if they stop crying, they will get it.
