What should be done if the child has a hordeolum?

Patient's question:

My child is five years old. He went to the hospital for a check-up and was diagnosed with a chalazion. Does my child's chalazion need surgery?

Doctor's answer:

Don't worry about local heat application promoting suppuration; mild inflammation can completely disappear after heat application. Systemic and local antibiotic treatment can promote the resolution of inflammation. Wiping the base of the eyelashes with an alcohol swab is very effective. When the eyelids start to itch, swell, or hurt, immediately wipe the base of the eyelashes with an alcohol swab. Close your eyes while wiping, and gently rub the base of the eyelashes back and forth with the alcohol swab (not too wet; squeeze out some alcohol when it's wet).
