Features: This book is a concise textbook of Chinese literature designed for non-Chinese major students. In reality, it is also a selected works of famous Chinese literary masterpieces. However, in this "selected works," some textual editing has been done: first, an "overview of literature" for each period has been added before the works of that period; second, necessary annotations have been provided for each work; and third, a "reading guide" has been included after each work. This selected works aims to "look back at Chinese literature, showcasing its artistic masterpieces to future generations, and preserving a 'Classics of the Twenty-First Century' of Chinese literature from the twentieth century."
Each unit in this book is divided into the following six parts:
1. Introduction to the Work: Includes information about the publication (date, journal, publisher) and the main content or plot summary of the work, as well as an explanation of the excerpts.
2. Text of the Work: Primarily focuses on "excellent excerpts." Longer works (novels and dramas) are excerpted, while shorter works (novels, essays, and poems) are also excerpted as much as possible. Each work includes several excerpts.
3. Editor's Notes: Provides a comprehensive yet concise explanation of the main reasons for selecting the work and a brief evaluation of it.
4. Author's Notes: Statements related to the work.
5. Related Reviews: Includes authoritative classic reviews, reviews appreciated by the editor, and differing opinions.
6. Bibliography: Includes a list of the author's major works, important research bibliographies, and an index of papers.
