Features: The series Language Studies Towards the 21st Century follows the thread of eight cutting-edge linguistic disciplines, based on representative research achievements in China, systematically summarizes the development of each discipline in the country, analyzes the important ideas and viewpoints of Chinese linguists, and provides an outlook on the future development of linguistics in the 21st century. The series consists of eight volumes: General Linguistics, Semiotic Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Semantics, Pragmatics, Sociolinguistics, Computational Linguistics, and Linguistic Demography. Each volume includes a preface, an introduction (discipline overview, development in China, trends in the 21st century), representative research achievements of Chinese scholars in the 20th century, an objective analysis and evaluation of each article, and a main bibliography. This series will provide a comprehensive reference for showcasing cutting-edge research achievements and promoting theoretical research and teaching in linguistics. This volume is Linguistic Demography, which systematically introduces the history and current state of domestic and international linguistic demography research. It selects and compiles 32 papers from domestic academic journals, showcasing the basic research directions and major achievements of Chinese linguistic demography. The selected papers cover six aspects: theoretical and methodological research in the discipline, vocabulary and cultural studies, national culture in grammar and discourse, nonverbal communication and culture, knowledge and concepts (the linguistic worldview), and lexicographical compilation in linguistic demography. The editors also objectively analyze each paper in terms of research background, value, and development direction to help readers deeply understand the content. At the end, a main bibliography of this discipline is provided. This book not only promotes theoretical research in linguistics but also serves as a comprehensive reference for teaching, suitable for linguists, graduate and undergraduate students in linguistics, and all readers interested in language and culture issues.
