Features: College English is a series of textbooks developed based on the College English Teaching Syllabus (for Liberal Arts and Science Undergraduates), approved by the State Education Commission. The series includes five types of teaching materials: intensive reading, extensive reading, listening, fast reading, grammar, and exercises. The trial edition was published in 1986, and the official edition in 1992.
The intensive reading, extensive reading, fast reading, and listening materials are compiled in six levels, with one book per level, for use in levels 1 to 6; the grammar and exercises materials are compiled in four levels, for use in levels 1 to 4. Both the intensive reading and listening materials are accompanied by teacher's guides and audio cassettes, and the extensive reading materials for levels 1 to 6 are also provided with teacher's guides. For students whose entry-level requirements are below the syllabus standards, two sets of preparatory intensive reading and extensive reading materials are separately compiled. The entire series was developed by Fudan University, Peking University, East China Normal University, Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, and Nanjing University, with Dong Yafen of Fudan University serving as the chief editor. The entire membership of the former College Foreign Language Textbook Review Committee's Comprehensive College English Review Group has been closely involved in the design and compilation of this series from the beginning. This revision was carried out after extensively soliciting opinions from teachers across the country who have used this series of textbooks and collecting feedback from tens of thousands of teachers and students through questionnaires. The Comprehensive College Foreign Language Teaching Guidance Committee provided comprehensive guidance and assistance in the revision of this textbook. The purpose of the revision is "to face the 21st century and elevate college English teaching to a new level." During the revision, the texts were appropriately adjusted based on the specific conditions of each material, improving the coverage of syllabus vocabulary and the frequency of common vocabulary, further refining exercises, and emphasizing the practice of key words. At the same time, the horizontal connections between the materials were strengthened, ensuring that each material is both self-contained and complementary, forming a cohesive whole. The revised edition pays more attention to the general applicability across disciplines such as liberal arts, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine, aiming to lay a solid and broad linguistic foundation for students.
