Features: The Wang Maimai Book Brand, Established in the 1980s. In 1987, a book titled The Spy Catcher by a former British MI5 intelligence officer caused a sensation in Western society, and China Central Television (CCTV) reported on it during the News Broadcast. As a result, the domestic publishing industry was inspired, scholars and translators worked tirelessly to search for publishing information, and relevant publishers did their utmost to seize publishing opportunities. However, it was the unknown Wang Maimai who emerged victorious from the crowd, signing a contract with Changjiang Literature and Art Publishing House. Making his debut, he achieved a resounding success with the translation of The Spy Catcher, selling nearly 100,000 copies in the first edition. The victory set the stage for further success, and in the following years, Wang Maimai's translated works such as Royal Sisters, Midnight Thoughts, Nancy Reagan's Autobiography, and The Unpublished Works of Mark Twain were published, each becoming bestsellers.
After 1990, due to teaching commitments, Wang Maimai began to compile college English textbooks and teaching materials for the CET-4 and CET-6 exams. From then on, bookstores near universities across the country continuously introduced new best-selling Wang Maimai English titles. It seemed as if overnight, Wang Maimai English became the dominant force in the domestic college English teaching materials market, leading the trend for over a decade. Today, the Wang Maimai English series has hundreds of titles, covering subjects from middle school to college and postgraduate entrance exams. The brand has gained increasing popularity among readers due to its clear explanations of textbook difficulties and accurate grasp of exam trends. Surveys show that students from many universities and high schools across the country own Wang Maimai books, with almost every student having at least one. The brand's popularity is evident.
The College English Intensive Reading Study Guide is a supplementary teaching material designed to accompany College English Intensive Reading published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press. The main objective of this guide is to embody the philosophy of "people-centered" and "student-focused" education, starting from the actual needs of students. It fully considers the various difficulties students encounter during their English learning process and strives to save them valuable time while improving their learning efficiency. The specific features are as follows:
1. Text Translation and Detailed Explanations: At the beginning of each unit, the text translation and difficult point explanations are arranged side by side, making it particularly convenient for students to follow the teacher's lectures. For difficult points mentioned during the lecture, students can refer to the translation on the left or compare and consult the explanations on the right, thereby doubling their learning efficiency.
2. Text Annotations Translation: Many students struggle to understand the English annotations in the text, so we have translated all the annotations into Chinese. We believe this will greatly benefit students during their preview of the text.
3. Text Background Knowledge: Most of the textbook passages are derived from English originals, with a wide range of themes, profound ideas, and complex backgrounds. For students from different cultural backgrounds, understanding the text can be challenging. To help them grasp the essence of the articles, we have included a "Text Background Knowledge" section.
4. Detailed Vocabulary Explanations: Based on the College English Teaching Syllabus and the CET Syllabus, we provide detailed explanations of key vocabulary in the text. We aim to help students summarize memory techniques, introduce related common phrases, and include a typical exam question for practice, thereby strengthening their vocabulary foundation.
5. Distinguishing Similar Words: As English learning progresses, students encounter more synonyms, which add to the difficulty of learning English and lead to frequent mistakes in various communication situations and CET exams. Therefore, in this section, we compare and analyze these easily confused words to help students understand their true meanings in different contexts.
6. Connecting College English Learning and CET-4: To closely align regular college English learning with the CET-4 exam, we have incorporated past CET-4 exam questions into each unit, integrating them throughout the college English textbook learning process. After students practice these questions, we provide a thorough analysis and explanation to help them adapt to and pass the CET-4 exam smoothly.
7. Reference Answers and Translations for After-Unit Exercises: All after-unit exercises come with reference answers, followed by Chinese translations. Any remaining difficulties are explained in detail.
8. Reading Skill Guidance: Considering the special importance of reading comprehension, which accounts for 40% of the CET-4 exam, we have specially designed a reading skill guide and included translations of the textbook reading materials to emphasize the importance of reading.
9. Writing Skill Guidance and Past Exam Analysis: In the CET-4 exam, writing accounts for 15%. Past exam experience shows that without regular writing practice, it is difficult to achieve ideal results. Writing not only needs training but also targeted training. To ensure students' training is effective, we have included writing skill guidance and an analysis of past writing exam questions, hoping to help them build a solid foundation through systematic guidance and practice.
10. CET-4 Achievement Test and Detailed Explanations: This is the final assessment for each unit, with question types and difficulty levels identical to the CET-4 exam. After the test, reference answers and detailed solutions are provided. We hope that through self-assessment, students can not only understand their mastery of the unit but also determine their future learning goals.
