Features: Chinese Characters Taught by Teacher Zhang is a textbook for Chinese character elective courses designed for international students with zero Chinese background, especially beginners from non-Chinese cultural circles. Based on the actual learning needs of international students, the textbook is divided into Chinese Character Recognition and Writing Textbook and Chinese Character Spelling Textbook, appropriately separating writing instruction from recognition instruction.
(1) Chinese Character Recognition and Writing Textbook uses the "picture method" as a starting point for form-meaning association, with phonetic radicals as the main thread, focusing on the writing, etymology, and structural analysis of characters, aiming to help learners build a cognitive structure that aligns with Chinese characters.
(2) Chinese Character Spelling Textbook employs the "spelling method" to establish relational associations and analogies between characters, with phonetic radicals as the main thread. It highlights character learning strategies in the form of "memory tips," intending to provide students with a systematic approach to transform character construction rules into recognition rules.
(3) To more effectively master Chinese characters, the textbook also emphasizes the relationship between character meanings and word meanings, providing words composed of the learned characters and example sentences for each word to be mastered, hoping to deepen the understanding of these characters and words in context.
(4) While teaching Chinese characters, the textbook also introduces learning strategies for Chinese characters, reflecting the recycling character memory method: associating new characters with familiar ones, finding similarities; using familiar characters to introduce new ones, expanding and generalizing, and mastering as many characters as possible through continuous repetition and derivation.
Chinese Characters Taught by Teacher Zhang is based on the National Chinese Language Education Administration's Syllabus for Chinese Character Proficiency and Levels, including a total of 1,885 characters, covering all Level A and B characters, as well as over 260 Level C and D characters, plus 20 extra characters such as "" (han), "" (han), and "" (lào) to meet students' needs.
Chinese Character Recognition and Writing Textbook includes 780 characters, with approximately 630 Level A characters, over 120 Level B characters, and a small number of Level C and D characters used as radicals. The textbook consists of 25 lessons, and each lesson requires two class hours.
Chinese Character Recognition and Writing Textbook is accompanied by a workbook, while Chinese Character Spelling Textbook is accompanied by an audio CD.
