Features: "Zhāng Lǎoshī Jiāo Hànzì" (Mr. Zhang Teaches Chinese Characters) is a textbook for Chinese character elective courses designed for international students with zero Chinese foundation, especially beginners from non-Chinese cultural backgrounds. Based on the actual learning needs of international students, the textbook is divided into two parts: "Chinese Character Recognition and Writing Textbook" and "Chinese Character Pronunciation and Reading Textbook," allowing for a separation between writing instruction and recognition instruction.
(1) The "Chinese Character Recognition and Writing Textbook" uses the "picture method" as a starting point for associating form and meaning, with phonetic radicals as the main thread, focusing on the writing, etymology, and structural analysis of Chinese characters. Its aim is to help learners clearly build a cognitive structure suitable for Chinese characters.
(2) The "Chinese Character Pronunciation and Reading Textbook" employs the "shape-matching method" to establish relational associations and analogies between Chinese characters, with phonetic radicals as the main thread. It highlights Chinese character learning strategies in the form of "memory tips," intending to provide students with a systematic approach to transform the rules of character construction into the rules of character recognition.
(3) To more effectively master Chinese characters, the textbook also pays attention to the relationship between character meaning and word meaning. It provides words composed of the learned characters and example sentences for each word that should be mastered, hoping to deepen the understanding of these characters and words in context.
(4) While teaching Chinese characters, the textbook also introduces learning strategies for Chinese characters, embodying the recycling memory method for Chinese characters. It encourages learners to connect new characters to familiar ones, find similarities, and expand generalization through repeated exposure and deduction, aiming to master as many characters as possible.
"Zhāng Lǎoshī Jiāo Hànzì" is based on the "Chinese Character Level Vocabulary and Character Grading Syllabus" of the National Office for Chinese Language Education, and it includes a total of 1,885 characters, covering all Level A and B characters, as well as over 260 Level C and D characters. Additionally, there are 20 characters beyond the syllabus.
The "Chinese Character Recognition and Writing Textbook" includes 780 characters, with approximately 630 Level A characters, over 120 Level B characters, and a small number of Level C and D characters used as radicals. The textbook consists of 25 lessons, and each lesson requires two class hours. The "Chinese Character Pronunciation and Reading Textbook" consists of 30 lessons, with each lesson also requiring two class hours.
