Features: This textbook—New Standard English (for Grade 3 Start)—is designed for use in the first semester of Grade 4. The book is divided into 11 modules (Module), including one final review module, with each module containing two units (Unit). Generally, the first unit presents the language content to be learned in the module, while the second unit provides several task-based exercises, including a song or short poem. The purpose of learning the song or poem is threefold: first, to cultivate students' sense of language and rhythm; second, to improve the accuracy of pronunciation; and third, to introduce certain Western cultures through rhymes and poems familiar to children in English-speaking countries. Some less commonly used words in the song or poem are not required for students to learn and use outside of it. In this book, students will further learn how to express actions happening now and things to be done, how to ask and explain abilities, how to seek permission, how to talk about sports competitions and travel activities, and how to express numbers 13–20 and the 12 months of the year. Some grammatical content is presented in the text, but it does not require the teacher to explain grammar rules, nor does it require students to master and apply them. Instead, it is expected that students will initially learn to use these sentences. Teachers are advised to pay attention to this during instruction. Additionally, this book includes two word lists at the end. The first is the learning word list, which is organized by module in the order of appearance and contains the words students are expected to master. The second is the reference word list, which is organized alphabetically and contains all the new words that appear in the book. Teachers are encouraged to use these lists as reference during instruction.
